To her surprise, performance poet and journalist Bandele found herself falling in love with a convicted murderer after giving a performance at the prison where he was confined. Five years later, she married him, subjecting herself and their love to the strictures of the penal system. This memoir not only recounts the story of their relationship, but also reflects on love, on class and privilege, and on the way the prison industry has affected the African-American population.
