Paul Hemphill's latest book gave me my first clear glimpse into the minds of people

I could only wonder about as a kid--the blue-collar white folks, the'crackers,' who populated my home town of Birmingham. It is a powerful and lovely memoir, one that spoke to me about some things that are so familiar, and about other things that were such a mystery during my youth.
